Often times, preppers focus on long term survival, and rightfully so. However, something that many do not take into consideration is nutrition for short term survival.
Our main goal, put simply, is to maximize performance. Hike as far as possible. Stay awake, alert, and physically ready as long as possible. The enemy, over the short term, to performance is a depletion of glycogen stores. Glycogen is how our body stores carbs. Though our body can use fat for energy, carbs are a preferred source when large amounts of energy are being expended, such as during a long hike or in an extended firefight. To keep these stores from running out, we need to consume enough carbs. Carbs are the name of the game over the short term. Fat is important, to an extent, and has the advantage of being far more calorie dense than carbohydrates. Protein, over the short term, is not something you need to worry about consuming large amounts. Generally, whatever protein is in your other food (rice, beans, grains, potatoes, etc.) will be sufficient.
